5 Days or 4 Days? What It Means for Employers

India’s new Labour Codes now allow a 4-day work week — but it’s optional, not mandatory. Weekly hours stay capped at 48, so employees trade longer days (up to 12 hours) for an extra day off.

Why 4 days could work: stronger hiring pitch, less commuting, better retention.

Why 5 days may still make sense: India already has high burnout rates, and 12-hour shifts aren’t ideal for demanding or client-facing roles. Without clear boundaries, “4 days” can quietly become “5 days of work in 4.”

There’s no universal answer — the right model depends on your industry and team, not the trend.
