🎯 HR Interview Question #1: “Tell Me About Yourself”
If there’s one question that almost every candidate hears in an interview, it’s this:
“Tell me about yourself.”
Simple question.
Yet, it’s the answer that makes many candidates nervous.
After interviewing hundreds of professionals over the years, I’ve noticed a common pattern.
Most candidates either:
❌ Start talking about their family background.
❌ Read their resume line by line.
❌ Speak for five minutes without answering the actual question.
Here’s the truth:
HR isn’t looking for your life story.
We’re trying to understand:
✔️ Can you communicate clearly?
✔️ Are you confident?
✔️ Can you explain your professional journey in a structured way?
A simple formula that works every time is:
Present → Past → Future
Present: What are you doing today?
Past: What experience or achievements have shaped your career?
Future: Why are you interested in this opportunity?
For example:
“I’m currently working as a Production Engineer with over three years of experience in process improvement and production planning. During my career, I’ve focused on improving efficiency and reducing downtime while working closely with cross-functional teams. I’m now looking for an opportunity where I can contribute my experience, learn from a dynamic organization, and take on greater responsibilities.”
✨ Keep it genuine. You don’t need to memorize a script. Speak naturally and let your personality come through.
